Let’s start talking!

One of the things the Sidney Democratic Committee figured out awhile ago was that it would be difficult to persuade Democrats in town to get involved with the Committee if we didn’t give them something to get involved with.

And that doesn’t necessarily mean the Committee. After all, most of the Democrats in Sidney can’t sit on the Committee (there are only 14 seats) and most are only marginally interested in the operations of the party here. What citizens are much more interested in is the issues that can effect them, their families, their jobs, their homes and their wallets.

With that in mind, we are pleased to announce the launch of Conversations, a series of public meetings to discuss solutions to some of the issues that could make all our lives better.

First up: the cost of energy.

We are pleased to announce that, on December 6th, we will welcome Leon Kalmus to a meeting at the Sidney Memorial Library to discuss municipal power, its pros and cons, and how it might be implemented to both improve the Town’s fiscal situation and simultaneously reduce the cost of running our houses and businesses here in Sidney.

Mr. Kalmus is a former Oneonta City Council member, a current member of both the Otego Democratic Committee and the New York State Democratic Committee, and a 25-year expert on the issues surrounding town power. He will discuss what it takes to implement such a plan in a town like Sidney, and will open the floor to questions and comments from the audience.

Again, the meeting is scheduled for December 6th at 7 p.m., at the Sidney Memorial Library. The meeting will be open to the public; light refreshments will be served.

Upcoming town committee meeting

The next meeting of the Sidney Democratic Committee will take place on October 10, 2007 at 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the Sidney Civic Center.

The agenda will include a discussion of the recent reorganization meeting of the Delaware County Democratic, as well as addressing some questions that have arisen as to the legality of that election.

We will also talk about voter outreach and event planning for the balance of 2007, and about getting into gear for the very important 2008 election cycle.

The meeting will be open to the public and all interested Democrats are welcome.
