Local campaigns: lessons from 2009 election results

As you probably already know by now, most of our candidates were unsuccessful in their bids for local office.

The lone exception to that was the re-election of incumbent Town Board Member Pete Cordes. Congratulations, Pete!

In spite of the results, we are very encouraged by the results.

We have put a little bit of a spark of life into our fellow Democrats here in Sidney, and we’ll want to build on that over the next two years. In each election district, our committee members hope to conduct ongoing outreach so that you will know us and we will know you.

In addition, while we’re very pleased with the campaigns we ran (at least, I know that I am happy with my campaign for Supervisor), it is very clear that our lone remaining weakness is getting out the vote. That is where they beat us.

Let’s face it, all the support in the world won’t help if your supporters don’t visit the polls on Election Day!

With support from the county committee, we’ll be working on that, too!

I expect, in the immediate future, we’ll be focused on looking around us for viable candidates for 2011 and preparing for the next supervisor race in 2013.

At the very least, we have put our Republican neighbors on notice. The Democrats of Sidney have arrived!
